- My guess is that the modem is not capable of that. Even if it could
- detect the tones without picking up the line (which I doubt), it lacks
- the relay to disconnect the downstream answering machine should the
- modem want to take over the connection. (The MVP288I and MVP288XF do
- *not* disconnect the "Phone" jack from the line during a data call.)
